A simple guide to creating your own sourdough starter from scratch.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a clean glass jar, combine 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of water.
  2. Stir until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Cover the jar with a cloth or plastic wrap, allowing air to flow in.
  4. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
  5. After 24 hours, discard half of the starter and add another 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of water.
  6. Repeat the feeding process every 24 hours for about 5-7 days until bubbles form and it doubles in size.
  7. Your starter is ready when it has a pleasant sour smell and can rise consistently after each feeding.

Notes

  • Use whole wheat flour for a faster fermentation.
  • Keep the starter in a warm place, around 70-75°F.
  • If you see any discoloration, discard the starter and start over.
