Description

A rich and decadent triple chocolate layer cake with moist layers and creamy frosting.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Melt chocolate chips with heavy cream in a double boiler. Stir until smooth. Let cool to room temperature.
  8. Beat butter and powdered sugar until creamy. Add cooled chocolate mixture and beat until fluffy.
  9. Assemble the cake by layering with frosting between each tier. Frost the top and sides.
