Description

A classic shepherd’s pie recipe featuring a savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas, frozen
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground lamb or beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion, carrots, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and peas. Season with salt and black pepper. Simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Transfer the meat mixture to a 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with butter and milk until smooth. Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, smoothing the top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the meat with lentils and vegetable broth.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like corn or green beans for more variety.
