Description
A classic red velvet cake with a rich, velvety texture and a hint of cocoa, topped with smooth cream cheese frosting.

- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp white vinegar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a bowl.
- In another bowl, mix oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients. Beat until smooth.
- Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Frost with cream cheese frosting once completely cooled.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for a deeper red color.
- Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.
- Buttermilk can be substituted with milk and 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice.
