- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, and continue to cook until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and paprika until smooth.
- Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce and stir until fully coated.
- If desired, transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle with breadcrumbs, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.
