Description
These healthy candy apples provide a delicious twist on the classic recipe, using natural sweeteners and a healthy coating for a guilt-free treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium apples
- 2 cups natural sweetener
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon natural food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 wooden candy apple sticks
- as needed non-stick cooking spray
- 1 parchment paper
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper and spraying it lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Have your apple sticks ready.
- Remove the wax from each apple by dipping them in boiling water for 5 seconds and drying them with a towel. Insert a stick into each apple.
- In a saucepan, combine the natural sweetener, corn syrup (if using), and water. Stir gently until combined.
- Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Clean the sides of the pan with a wet brush to prevent crystallization.
- Boil until the thermometer reads between 300°F and 310°F. This should take about 15-20 minutes. Do not leave the pan unattended during the last few minutes.
- Once the temperature is reached, remove from heat and stir in the food coloring and vanilla extract if using. Let the bubbles settle for 1-2 minutes.
- Tilt the pan to one side and dip each apple, letting excess syrup drip off for a few seconds before placing on the prepared baking sheet.
- Allow the apples to cool completely at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a calibrated thermometer for accuracy; the syrup must reach 300°F for the proper texture.
- Wait for the bubbles to settle completely before dipping to avoid a textured coating.
- Store at room temperature and consume within 1-2 days for best texture.
