Description

This French Toast Casserole is a delicious and easy breakfast dish that’s perfect for feeding a crowd. It’s rich, custardy, and topped with a sweet streusel that makes it irresistible!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread, cut into cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Add the cubed French bread to the egg mixture and gently fold to coat the bread evenly. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to soak.
  4. While the bread is soaking, prepare the streusel topping by mixing together the melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and nutmeg in a separate bowl until crumbly.
  5. Transfer the soaked bread mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the bread mixture.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set.
  7. Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with maple syrup drizzled on top.

Notes

  • You can prepare this casserole the night before and refrigerate it. Just add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • Feel free to add fruits like berries or bananas to the bread mixture for added flavor.
