  • Author: ushinzomr

Description

A rich and savory soup made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with melted cheese and crusty bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 slices of crusty bread
  • 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sugar, cooking until the onions are caramelized, about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in the white wine and scrape any bits off the bottom of the pot. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Add the beef broth and thyme, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of crusty bread and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  7. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10-15 minutes.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For added depth, use a mix of beef and chicken broth.
  • Feel free to substitute Gruyère with Swiss or mozzarella cheese if desired.
