Description

A classic Italian lasagna recipe with layers of pasta, rich meat sauce, and creamy cheese.


Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Cook lasagna noodles as per package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  3. Brown ground beef and sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, cook until softened.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Mix ricotta cheese with egg in a bowl.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  7. Layer 4 lasagna noodles, half the ricotta mixture, half the mozzarella, and 1/3 of the meat sauce. Repeat layers.
  8. Top with remaining noodles, sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes.
  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for beef.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace meat with mushrooms and spinach.
  • Lasagna can be assembled ahead and refrigerated overnight before baking.
