A timeless dessert that combines tender, flaky crust with sweet and spiced apple filling, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups All-purpose flour (Plus extra for dusting)
- 1 cup Unsalted butter (Cold and cubed)
- 1/4 cup Granulated sugar (For the crust)
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 6 to 8 tablespoons Ice water
- 6 cups Apples (Peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended))
- 3/4 cup Brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
- 1 Egg yolk (For egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon Milk (For egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Divide dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In another bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly.
- Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to fit your pie dish. Place the rolled-out dough in the dish and fill with the apple mixture.
- Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut slits on top to allow steam to escape.
- Mix egg yolk and milk in a small bowl. Brush the mixture over the crust.
- Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.
- Cool for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of vanilla extract to the apple filling.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic combination.
