Description

Capirotada is a traditional Mexican bread pudding made with layers of bread, syrup, and various spices.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups of bolillo or French bread, sliced
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cloves
  • 1 cup of queso fresco or mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to a boil and simmer until sugar dissolves.
  3. Layer half of the bread slices in a baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle half of the raisins and nuts over the bread.
  5. Pour half of the syrup over the layer.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, raisins, nuts, and syrup.
  7. Top with shredded cheese.
  8. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving.

  • Serve warm or at room temperature.
  • Can be topped with whipped cream or ice cream.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
