Description
This classic bread pudding recipe is a comforting dessert made with stale bread, eggs, milk, and spices. It’s warm, custardy, and perfect for using up leftover bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 large eggs
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup raisins or dried fruit (optional)
- Butter for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
- In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and raisins (if using).
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the liquid mixture over the cubed bread and gently stir until the bread is fully soaked.
- Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
- Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Serve warm with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- You can substitute the raisins with chocolate chips or nuts if desired.
- For added flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of bourbon to the custard mixture.
