Description

This classic apple pie is made with a flaky crust and filled with sweet, spiced apples. Perfect for any occasion!


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Divide dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Roll out one dough disc to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place it in the pie plate and fill with sliced apples.
  5. In a small bowl, mix sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle over apples. Dot with butter.
  6. Roll out the second dough disc and place over the filling. Seal edges and cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  7. Mix egg yolk and milk, brush over the crust.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.
  9. Cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter pie, you can add more sugar to the apple filling.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert.
