This classic apple pie is made with a flaky crust and filled with sweet, spiced apples. Perfect for any occasion!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Divide dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
- Roll out one dough disc to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place it in the pie plate and fill with sliced apples.
- In a small bowl, mix sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle over apples. Dot with butter.
- Roll out the second dough disc and place over the filling. Seal edges and cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- Mix egg yolk and milk, brush over the crust.
- Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.
- Cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter pie, you can add more sugar to the apple filling.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert.
